Ash wasn’t at the docks when we pulled in, and I let out a breath of relief at being able to get off the boat before being bombarded with questions. After we secured the boat to the pier and made sure everything was put back in place, at least as much as we could, I took a step back to survey the damage.

Most of the shots had hit the deck and the bridge, and the damage to the hull didn’t look so bad now that we knew we were safe on land. I had been wondering why we hadn’t taken on any significant water, but the height of the shots had kept most of the damage above the water level, which further drove home our theory that the shooters had not wanted to hurt us, but merely scare us. Still, though, this boat wasn’t fit to sail in its current condition, and the fact that we made it back without incident was thanks more to pure luck than anything else.

Holm sauntered up beside me and put his hands on his hips as he scanned the boat.

“Well, we sure do have a horseshoe up our asses, don’t we?” he quipped.

I gave him a sidelong look. “You’re starting to sound like Birn and Muñoz.”

“You think they’re wrong?” he asked with an eyebrow raised. “I don’t see how we made it back to shore alright, but yet, here we are.”

I pinched and rubbed at my forehead with my thumb and forefinger. “I’d rather not overanalyze this,” I sighed. “At least not until after we’re done breaking the news to everyone.”

Mariah walked up the pier from checking out the aft end of the boat.

“You guys did warn me,” she reflected as she approached us. “You said you get shot at a lot.”

Holm snorted, which sent Mariah into a small fit of giggles.

“In all seriousness, though, I’m glad we’re all okay,” she asserted. “Let’s get these phone calls over with and then get a drink.” She looked around toward the town with hope in her dark eyes. “There may be two or even three pub options here.”

“Stop,” I warned her. “Don’t get my hopes up for variety.”

“Choices?” Holm laughed. “My day just took a turn for the better!”

“I’ll call Bear,” she announced. “Robbie, why don’t you call Ash?”

“Sure,” he said dejectedly.

“And I’ll call Diane,” I announced. “Maybe she will be so surprised to hear from me that it won’t faze her when I tell her we owe Ash a boat.”

Holm snorted again and then shot Mariah a dirty look before she could laugh at him again.

I left the pair on the pier and walked over toward the stone wall at the end of the docks. After pulling the phone from my pocket and dialing Diane’s number, I leaned back against the uneven stones, ignoring the discomfort as they pressed awkwardly into my spine as I waited for her answer.

“Hey, Marston,” Diane said sharply, only two rings later. I could hear the bustle of the office behind her and realized she was four hours earlier than we were.
